Avery Morrissey, MSW, LSWAIC

Hi, I’m Avery!

I believe that one of the most meaningful aspects of therapy is building a deep and trusting relationship. Having a therapist with a similar lived experience can create a safe space for this relationship to develop.
I am transmasculine and queer identified and hope to provide a safe place for people on the LGBTQIA spectrum to engage meaningfully in therapy. In my own life I have received services and care from providers who are LGBTQ identified and it has greatly benefited my ability to progress and meet my goals. I feel privileged to provide such care as a provider myself.

I graduated from Portland State University with a masters in social work in 2021. During my master’s program I interned with the Gender Care Center (T Clinic) at Randall Children’s Hospital. I assessed and counseled transgender/gender expansive youth and their family’s regarding possible gender affirming medical care. I also interned with the CSEC Unit with Oregon Child Welfare, a specialized unit supporting youth who were sexually exploited or at risk of being so. Prior to my therapeutic practice, I worked in child welfare for eight years. My time at child welfare developed my understanding of family dynamics, resilience, and the importance of compassionate support during difficult times. I developed the ability to create safe, non-judgmental spaces, allowing for connection, and strengthened my skills in trauma-informed care and meeting people where they’re at.

When not working I enjoy spending time with my partner and cats, reading, embroidering, sewing, going for walks, doing yoga, camping and procrastinating.

Supervision: Avery practices under the supervision of Mackenzie Dunham.

Specialty: Transgender/nonbinary adolescents and adults, queer/LGBTQIA adolescents and adults.
